SR20 or RB20
i think its time for a new engine. KA's arent going good for me. im thinking of doing either an RB or SR swap.
SR20 pros
turbo power.
common.
keep stock and will pass visual by cop.
RB20 pros.
turbo inline 6
who can say they have the heart of a skyline?
turbo
price wise.. ive seen complete RB20det swaps for as low as 900. im talking complete swap. plug and play and drift away. sounds pretty convincing but im thinking.. parts availibility. routine maintinance.. gasket sets. where can i find that?
sr's are more common and ive found a listing on wikipedia that lists all parts numbers for oem replacement parts and what car each part comes from. but sr's are a little pricey. im leaning towards the s14 blacktop with vvl. but seeing them at 2.8k?? cant afford that.
s13 redtops ive seen for no lower than 1300. id be happy with a black top but wouldnt mind a redtop.
so wats everyones opinions on this? and if anyone knows... where can i get an engine from reliable source that is gurantee'd to run without a knock or any problems.. get at me.
im in need of an engine. i cant daily my KA anymore cuz its about to give up. LOL.

Re: SR20 or RB20
decided on SR. sunrisejdmmotors stocks s13 blacktops for 1800. and i can do that swap mmyself along with the wiring. the RB looks more complicated. and i dont wanna run into other problems like brake booster hitting the ex mani.
any one know of any cheaper blacktops?

Re: SR20 or RB20
ohh. yeah.. i heard from numerous sources that they over price alot of shit. i also have a friends uncle who owns a shop and deals with them say not to buy shit from them.
i dont know where to buy from tho.
theres always that thought of a spun bearing, engine knock, and fcked turbo if i buy from a prive seller. but theres always that concern buying any used japanese engine from an importer too.
ive had word of LKQ having an SR but just throwing it out cuz it was a JDM motorset. not availible in US. i guess its not sellable without papers from the company.
im looking for somewhere local. im willing to drive 2-3 hours north or south of stockton to pick one up. driving my truck is no problem for me if im picking up an SR.

Re: SR20 or RB20
KA-T would be fun. ive thought about doing that but that would be pretty costly. im not looking for big power. ive owned an SR but in a FWD platform. i loved the power.
i drift my car and yes, power is a must but im looking to have controlable power. im getting bored with the KA with all bolton mods. and think that SR woulf be a good step forward

Re: SR20 or RB20
cool... hope you find a good motor.. hay if you really really want to go that route.. instead of looking for a motor from a importer.. look around craigslist or any other classified for ppl who started the project but didn't finish. and fuck around and get another 40 with a sr in it.. take the motor. sell the shell (part out) orrr put your ka into the second 40 and sell it whole ... i've came acroos acouple of 40 with rb and sr swaps go for about 3k and less.. so if you really look you'll probably find one.. matta fact my boy bought one for 1500 non running sr20 240sx.. spent about 100 bucks putting it back to gether and tadaaa now he's rolling around with it. just food for thought..

Re: SR20 or RB20
I would say rb hands down. but ka-t is really cool, I knew a guy boosting 14 psi on the track with stock block and its still running as far as I know.

Re: SR20 or RB20
the bad thing about rb is.. if yoru water pumps goes out.. your fawked. you'll have to find one over seas. special order ( if you can find it ) spend a arm and a leg on the part and then spend a arm and a leg for shipping.. parts are expensive for the rb's over in japan that's why skylines are swaping over to 2jzgtte cuzz parts are cheaper and same powerband

Re: SR20 or RB20
RB>KA>SR ...
KA makes more HP/TQ per pound of boost than an SR. There are plenty of people making 350+HP on a stock block KA. Even more making BIG HP/TQ on a built block. No replacement for displacement, not to mention for the cost of a quality SR swap you can build a badass turbo kit for a KA.
As for RBs, well. RB26DETT with RB25DET RWD transmission is the shizzle. Out of my price range though.

LOL
Let me clarify *AHEM*
SR > RB > KA
Its a suggestion to JOZyS13 since he was the one asking which one would be better for him. Not for ANYONE else.

Re: SR20 or RB20
thanks brett.
what do you guys think about the S14 sr-de? 190hp. but no turbo.
im looking at a motorset for 900. i was thinking i can build it and turbo later when i have money.. but iono how good the ignition system on the non turbo would be seeing that the turbo sr has individual coil packs and the non turbo does not.

Re: SR20 or RB20
Ooo. local.
but someone please give insight.. or slap me upside the head.. about getting an s14 SR20de. ive seen vids. they look to be doing fine stock with no turbo.
ive also seen a turbo setup on one and it looks badass. the guy whos running it has it swapped in an 86. sed he's running it at 10lbs with 10:1 psi.. but with meth injection.
im thinking just hookup on some low comp pistons before dropping in either a T25 or T28 and a stock manifold. up the injectos to 255, FMIC/piping and bov then call it a day.
