The black top is the newer engine. The silver top came in the AE101, while the black top was in the AE111. The only difference is in the rotational components, i guess Toyota was trying to tune engines by minimizing rotational mass. The silver top has a stronger connecting rod. Compression ratio was raised in the black top, idk to what. maybe 10:1 in the silver top, 11:1 in the black top? Also black top was OBD II,compared to the silver top, which was OBD I.

with the staments above.. seems to me that the black top has the upper hand. and IF your a tuning wizard.. having an OBDII to tune will also give the black top the upper hand in comparison to the silvertop

i think the newer of the 2 uses a mass air flow sensor and the other uses a manifold absolute pressure sensor

"Lower-spec American AE86 SR5 models used the 1587 cc 4A-C SOHC unit,
did not have an optional LSD, and had rear drum brakes. Also, the SR5
model had a softer suspension, and small styling and interior changes." -wikipedia

sort of, most people do the opposite, mate 16v head on 20v block.
ITBS on Blacktop are larger. BT ecu runs richer

not to mention the 20v redline lines at amillion rpm. lol . the sr5 motor is a monster of a toyota motor which is single cam carburetor but not to be underestimated or overestimated. remember the corolla is fun because of the difficulty level. and if you can master the sr5, *** bow *** you are DADDY.
