Re: New to the board: JDM Speedworx
Hey everyone, thanks for all the responses! Sorry, I don't get too much time to frequent the forums as much as I'd like.
Just to throw in my .02 on the importation thing, I own a few RHD vehicles, and there are a LOT of people in CA alone that claim to have legit registered RHD vehicles that they own or are selling. As someone mentioned earlier, from my research as well, the only correct way to register the cars legally for street use is going through someone affiliated with the NHTSA, like an authorized "conversion shop" which will make the car meet DOT and EPA requirements. You can petition to get a letter from the original manufacturer stating the car has already been built to be compliant with U.S. standards (probably won't happen). Or you can crash test the car. Now, there's a lot more details when going about this, and I may not have the info 100% correct, but NHTSA states that the car must go through an authorized importer. I don't see why the vehicle can't come in without the engine and be reinstalled by someone else, then go in for crash testing. If it passes, it passes. Again, I may not have everything 100% correct, but this is based off what I can remember from the short amount of research I've done.
I'm planning on moving forward with this process on a couple of my cars that aren't legal yet. I think it's a shame that there are so many of us that really know the RHD cars aren't much different from U.S. counterparts and can't be legalized without a big hassle. I want to take on the hassle for the other fellow enthusiasts (when I can make time) so that the process becomes easier for everyone who wants RHD cars of common interest in the future.

Haha, thanks guys. Yeah, I'm going to continue researching the process, and probably buy a cheap yet popular Honda to see how smoothly things will go, and how pricey the "conversion shops" will be. The good thing is, the older the car, the easier legalization is in most cases.
I'll definitely keep you guys updated as I move forward! Wish me luck! LOL
