Re: engine swaps
the v8 is legal because of a few things.
its a car engine to car swap
its a new engine in an older car
i've swapped over the smog equipment (which still gotta trouble shoot... damn evap system)
and i'm going to get the car BAR certified.
by doing such things, the car is legal, and i STILL get the car smogged as law dictates.

LS1: Gen III Small Block Chevy 350 C.I. V8 engine 5.7L
Obviously a USDM engine so he can use it, and it came from a vehicle that was newer than his rx7

Re: engine swaps
not really, ls1 only weighs about 70 lbs more than the 13b-rew found in the FD.
FRP hood, fenders, and batter relocation takes care of that, so you can more or less be back at stock weight

Re: engine swaps
well, if you want to stick to nissan, I'd get an RB26 with the RB25 tranny ( I hear the 26 is set up solely for awd, whereas the platform for the 25 can be use rwd, research necessary to be sure) thats really nissan golden line, any straight six would do. although vg or vq swaps aren't bad either.

skyline came in different trim levels. it just happenes that skyline is synonymous with the GTR trim level, there are rwd versions with an rb26 its just rare

Re: engine swaps
despite popular consensus, having a smog exempt car does not mean you can swap whatever you want into it. a diligent police officer can still pull you over and write you up for a referee ticket. and if the swap is not legit (jdm engines, missing or modified smog equipment, etc), your car will be flagged. in which cases most people just pay the fine instead of going through all the smogging and ref bs. although doing that also makes your car more susceptible to future scrutiny by your local pd.
then there's the other news i've been hearing about... apparently, due to the california budget crisis, the referee program may lose its funding. which could mean one of two things; no more referees mean no more legalizing or "bar certified" swaps; or bar will initiate it's own fund raising program, like pull more people over.
i'm not sure about this subject yet, so further research or waiting for more news about it might be in order.
if you want a fast car that's street legal, save your money and buy a stock fast car, like a 350z if you want a nissan. some of them are getting close to $10k.

nissan was creative over the years,
and don't forget about the 4 door skylines as well.

Re: engine swaps
jon, if you're looking for a decently fast car you can take out to autocross and still be able to drive reliably everyday, i suggest looking at s13s, yes i said it, s13s are relatively cheap, even after the drift craze, unlike the ae86. the ka24 engine, although jokingly called "truck motor" has plenty of torque and decent power. don't worry about engine swaps until you've mastered driving the car. other alternatives could be ford mustang, chevy camaro, just stay away from rotaries until you are more comfortable working on a car every weekend and have a reliable daily driver.
honestly, the choice list would be a lot bigger if we didn't live in the us where every rwd car with a decently powerful engine is only available in automatic transmission form.
