ok, so we had a sub today in class and hes the teacher of the smog cert class. he was talking about if you take your car to a test only
smog check station in california and fail, you can fill out an
application online to get $500 from the government to get your car
fixed to pass smog.
thought you cali folk might like to know that.

well thats true about the $500. but you still gotta pay it back i think. do you go to delta? there is this thing thats hush hush at delta that happens once a year. but you gotta be there early to guarantee a spot. basically they smog your car if you fail they'll give you a voucher to fix it. which is i think $500.

yes, i go to delta.
and no, you dont have to pay it back.
you have to go to a special shop which is like sponsored by the state or something, so theyre basically just doing the work for free, not losing money by paying shops.

Re: failing smog = monies.
Well, they're not doing the work for free. Gold Shield station charge the consumer parts and labor; the state only pays $500 of the total cost.

i know that, but what im saying is since they are state sponsored, the state doesnt actually lose any money.
they just dont get as much.

Re: failing smog = monies.
Pretty much the state is just trying to bring smog levels down in california. and they are willing to pay $500 of your total repair cost, if you fail the baseline smog, (you have to apply for this CAP program or you can goto delta to do that pre smog thing) That event only comes around once every 2 years. So let's say the repairs only cost 200, you' don't get 300 bucks. and if the repairs are 700, then you have to pay the 200 difference.

not to mention that this program has been modified with the budget pass (i think)
the CAP and the Referree program was suspended for a while last year.

speaking of smog, i'm due soon. i need to reset my ecu coz right now my timing is slightly advance. so my question is when i put it back, how can i reset the ecu without getting to the ecu?.
i've heard if you disconnect the - on the battery then press on the brakes it'll reset. - failed
also heard if you disconnect the negative overnight - didn't try yet
any ideas ?

Re: failing smog = monies.
Check your base timing first. cause if you d/c the battery, you'll lose fuel trim too, then your car will run like shit for a while, til it relearns itself. Could be a bad o2 sensor too.

I got CAP approved on my car this year. Took it to speedee let them dink around with it for a couple days to get it to pass. Reset the timing and a bad O2 sensor was like $600. had a $100 deductible anyways so it worked out well for me.

Re: failing smog = monies.
so the timing set into your ecu is slightly advanced? there is no changing it, you have to have it flashed back stock, then flashed again to get the advance back, unless your just talking base timing, then you just set everything back to stock, probably 10 degrees btdc, then advance it again after it passesJR240sx wrote:speaking of smog, i'm due soon. i need to reset my ecu coz right now my timing is slightly advance. so my question is when i put it back, how can i reset the ecu without getting to the ecu?.

Re: failing smog = monies.
I think you have to jump something before you change the timing, so the computer doesn't automatically adjust.

Re: failing smog = monies.
If your timing is adjusted on a 240SX, it is usually done through the distributor, in which case changing the timing back is as easy as hooking up a timing light, loosesning up the two 10mm bolts on the dist, disconnecting your TPS(throttle position sensor) and adjusting until you get 20°btdc (Stock timing on a KA24DE).
