wow you guys have no idea how ecstatic i am right now :snoop: Very Happy... i
have finally found my baby i am going to finally buy my first 240 and
im way excited... it is a 89 hatch, the guy said he just did a swap but
im not sure if he put another KA in there or what (shall be discussed
on thursday hopefully). Supposedly it only has 50k on the motor???? who
knows???? (will be discussed on thursday). The only problems are that
after the swap the guages and the taillights dont work anymore. any
body know what that could be? and im not sure if the swap was
professionally done or if it was done by him, (will be discussed on
thursday. the question i have is that since its been swapped and what
not and it is an 89... what are some things i should look for when i go
take a look at the car???????

If he claims a shop did the swap, ask for paper work to prove it. Other then that I dont know the 240's so hopefully some of the 240 guys will chime in for ya.. But basic things to look for is body repair and with these cars always check for frame damage, you never know what had been done with these cars..

Gauges and taillights don't work? Could be potentially big electrical problems. And if it was a sr20 swap I think you need a 180sx cluster. Correct me if I'm wrong.

woah didnt know people were so negative about SR's.... i wouldnt mind if thats what he swapped in to tell you the truth because im planning on getting around to it some time in the far future... not really soon tho cuz mcdonalds pay sucks lol... but i really doubt it tho because i would think he would sell it for more than $1500 if he swapped SR into it.....

I'm only against the SR cause of smog, illegal motor swap...

After looking at the ad sounds like he beat the car to hell and now is just trying to dump it. Never know till you actually look at it sense he already claimed the car don't look like it did in the pics anymore...

thres nothing wrong w/ the sr, it's actually a pretty good engine.

yeah, pretty much what everyone else said on here. in addition to that, check for any leaks of any kind, try to take a peak at the actual chassis (like inside the engine bay, doorjams, and trunk area for any framework), inspect the body lines if they seem too off, if it runs test drive it, listen for any odd sounds/noises (he might give excuses about them), and having a welded diff might make some sounds in the rear so don't get surprised by them. also, check the underbody for anything (chassis work/damage, condition of exhaust piping, leaking, etc.) i would actually grab some parts and wiggle them around just to make sure its ok (like the muffler). pretty much do more than just "kick the tires" on it.

Overall it looks nice even though his pics aren't current. I would actually ask for current pics, and any info on the history of the car such as how many reports it has. I know you're excited about getting your first car, and being a 240SX, but this is where you have to be the most critical.

excitement is a big factor in getting a car. i actually wasn't planning on getting my miata until i saw it.

and the car having a welded diff means he probably whipped it around a bit. that means it was driven hard, and causes more wear on components. check out as much as you can, and if possible, bring someone who has a lot of experience with 240sx to help you look at it.

well just for your info guys he swapped in KA24DE... swapped out single cam.

well neways my view on this is if its only the the lights and guages on this thing that all outta wack, y not just buy it... i mean i really dont think it could be too bad of a problem. i just think that when it comes down to wiring and all that electrical mumbo jumbo, some people just get a lil intimidated... i mean if push comes to shove what can be worse than a new harness? and anyways we're learning wiring and electricals in my auto class right now so i feel like it could possibly be a great learning experience :p ..... theres no way you know it is hard untill you've done it already...

That's one way to look at it haha. Shrugs I personally wouldn't mind working on a 240, but it wouldn't be my daily driver though.

electrics isnt that bad,
i had to redo alot of things when i did my ls1 swap.
but *I* did it, and only me.

trying to decode whats wrong from another guy's work is another can of worms.

FSMs help greatly

i also second checking out weld-joints and wear and tear points on the body.

a car fax is fine and all, but a lot of information isn't reported, especially by drifters and kids. but wear and tear doesn't lie.

look underneath the car, look for any signs of previous accidents, maybe with an ill fated curb or something.
is the alignment fine?
etc.

the alignment is a bitch.... pulls so hard to the right... p/s is out... brakes, calipers/ and rotors are fked up... needs new tires... and it needs to pass smog for registration... so means
i need stock exhaust cuz the one on there the cat is hollowed out...
